Are Cyber Criminals Stealing from You?

How redundant can we be regarding safe Internet communicating and web browsing? As much as we preach maintenance, I’ve noticed that in the current year all of our clients have had at least one malware infected computer; granted, most of those infected machines have been laptops which are used out of the office but no one environment has been safe from infection. Quite often I’m asked what spammers, hackers, and other malcontents hope to gain. In the old days, the purpose was a tech arrogance and a sense of dominance and destruction, you know, striking out against Microsoft and the corporate world. At some level we seemed to put up with cyber vandals and their ilk but so much for computer bad boys and girls. That complacency has opened the doors for cyber criminals who seek to steal your personal information: i.e., social security numbers, credit card numbers, bank account information, and passwords. This criminal assault has increased not only with spam and infected websites but also with instant message programs and social network sites, not to mention file sharing sites.

More specifically, recently I was discussing this matter with John Joynt, Manager of Data Network Services for NPower, a non-profit organization which provides technology support to non-profits in this area. He related a story of one of their long time clients, Evergreen Children’s Association, which had $30,000 removed from their checking account. Please read the full story in the NPower Blog, http://community.npowerseattle.org/npowering/cyber-theft-p1/. Better yet please review the NPower blog periodically about security and tech tips. In addition to the story, John turned me on to a couple of security sites that you might find helpful:

On the other hand, you know that there is danger out there and you work at being careful. Yet you still get infected, so what do you do? At this point your existing antivirus didn’t catch the culprit in time and you need to run a removal tool. I’ve found the following utilities helpful most of the time:

Free removal utilities

Free Antivirus Utilities

Online Scanners

No system is immune to pirates and scalawags but I think these tools can help. Download a tool of your choice and run a scan on your system. If you are infected, restart your computer in “Safe Mode with Networking”, disable “system restore”, update the tool of your choice, and run a scan. If your system is clean, restart in normal mode and run a second scan or two; if you are still clean, enable “system restore”. If you can’t restart in “safe mode” or install or update the removal definitions on your removal utility, either find a tech who will spend the time to find a way to remove the infection or, best yet, reformat your hard drive and reinstall. Find your re-installation media now and backup or image your computer tonight.

Just what is Gmail Anyway?

We all know about Google, and what a useful search engine it can be when looking for information on the internet. However, did you know that Google also offers a fairly user-friendly selection of online tools to help make your life easier no matter what computer you are using? The possibilities that Gmail and Google Docs offer are fairly limitless in terms of portability: if you have an internet connection and a computer, you can use them.

In this article, we’re going to cover Gmail: How to sign up for an account and why you may want to use it. First off, why should you get a Gmail account? How is it different than any of the other web-based email options out there?

Gmail has many features that draws users to it. One of the first and most important is a spam filter integrated with the email account. You may have either had a spam problem in the past, or have an external program installed to block spam. In Gmail, you don’t really need to worry about either. Not only is the spam filter fairly reliable as well as accurate, it’s easy to see what spam emails your account has placed in the spam folder and to report spam emails to be blocked in the future from your inbox.

Space is another big reason to create a Gmail account. While Google may have started at 2 Gigabytes of free storage per account, it has grown over the years to upwards of 6 GB of free space. One of Gmail’s messages in the beginning in fact, was that you’d never need to delete an email again.

Above all else, Gmail at its most basic is free. While there are some options you can upgrade to for your business needs, if all you’re looking for is a personal email that offers solid usability, the free version of Gmail is honestly one of the better options out there.

The many features of Gmail are numerous and multi-faceted. The above are only a few basic reasons to get interested in Gmail. So why not sign up for an account and see where it can take you? The following video has step by step instructions on how to create a Gmail account and get started:

Google Running Scared?

Microsoft may have developed a contender that threatens Google’s Web search dominance.

In a story headlined “Fear grips Google,” the New York Post reports that the launch of Microsoft’s Bing search engine has so upset Google co-founder Sergey Brin that he has top engineers working on “urgent upgrades” to Google’s service. Brin is said to be leading a team to determine how Microsoft’s search algorithm differs from the closely guarded one Google employs. The tabloid also notes that it’s rare for Google’s co-founders to have such a hands-on involvement in the company’s daily operations.  Click here for story!
